As it says on their website, VOX-POP is a 'creative space' for the humanities, where 'creativity, experiment, and the sharing of knowledge' take central stage. What draws these two artists together for me is that they both make media art installations that are handmade. It was a call for action, to designers, producers and consumers to make products repairable and to have them repaired. It advocated repair as a sustainable alternative to the throwaway mentality. We provocatively promoted it as an even better solution than recycling, since to recycle still means throwing things away. The manifesto received international recognition and many follow-ups. The symposium 'In Repair: Towards a Post-Throwaway Society' builds on recent studies of repair, which frame the concept in an emphatically broad context. Activities like mending, renovating, healing, rehabilitating, revitalizing, recovering, curing or hacking help us deal with problems in a social, sustainable, and resourceful way. During this evening we explore how repair thinking could set directions for a post-throwaway society.
